Finance Secretary and National Power Board ex-officio Chair Benjamin E. Diokno has commended the National Power Corporation (NPC) for its recent energy sector accomplishments and highlighted its important role in advancing President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr.’s goal of a more sustainable and resilient energy system in the country.

“Today, we face new challenges in our pursuit of a more sustainable and resilient energy system. The National Power Corporation’s (NPC) role is central to this ambitious endeavor – and for 87 years, the NPC has stood resolute in pursuit of its mandates on missionary electrification, dam and watershed management, and operation of the government’s remaining power assets,” he said in a message to the NPC for their 87th Anniversary

Under the guidance of the Board, the NPC was able to energize 6 new areas in Northern Samar, Basilan, and Zamboanga del Sur.

On top of this, the NPC also managed to increase the service hours of 5 power facilities in Masbate and Western Samar and has made progress in various projects to improve and maintain the transmission system in the off-grid provinces of Palawan, Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Catanduanes, and Masbate.

The National Power Board Chair also shared that the NPC recently energized and inaugurated two new off-grid areas in Taytay and Culion in Palawan.

As a result of the new power facilities, the NPC now operates and maintains a total of 27 Small Power Utilities Group plants in Palawan.

“I assure you that you can continue to rely on the steadfast support of the National Power Board as you pursue your mission,” he told NPC.

Just recently, the Finance Chief officially signed a €60-million grant for the Green Economy Program in the Philippines during his trip to Brussels, Belgium on October 25, 2023.

The grant aims to support the country in areas such as circular economy, renewable energy (RE), and climate change mitigation.

The program will complement the NPC’s initiatives aimed at fast-tracking the Philippines’ transition into a green economy by improving energy efficiency in the country, among others, Secretary Diokno said.

“This move attests to our firm resolve to translate the Philippines’ climate change agenda into concrete climate action,” Secretary Diokno said.

“This new, green initiative is just one among many partnerships that the government is forging to mobilize resources towards our vision of an energy-secure Philippines,” he added.

The NPC is a government-owned-and-controlled corporation (GOCC) tasked to energize far-flung, off-grid areas and islands in the Philippines.

The DOF monitors and evaluates the financial performance and operations of GOCCs. It is also in charge of reviewing and coordinating policies, plans, and programs of GOCCs.
